Thinking About Latin America – Culture, Art, Intellectuals And Media

This dossier proposes to bring together articles that address the circulation of ideas from groups linked to the fields of arts, letters, sciences and politics in Latin America based on discussions that surrounded the debate on national projects, with an emphasis on action in various media, such as newspapers, magazines, television and radio. Therefore, here we propose a reflection throughout the 20th century, during authoritarian periods (whether in dictatorial moments, or in moments of tension in the implementation of national projects in moments of democratic stability.) in which Latin American artists and intellectuals conceived projects and they built sociability networks thinking about anti-hegemonic action. Thus, we bring together works that debate the Latin reality by researchers from all over Latin America, especially Brazilians and Argentines. From a theoretical-methodological point of view, this dossier focuses on the Social History of Culture, situating the spaces of action built by various agents based on projects that sought alternatives to the authoritarian and imperialist traditions present until now in national states. Such reflection seems salutary to rethink the fields of dispute and conception of what constitutes the construction of the Latin American being, what is the role of our continent in intellectual and artistic networks, in proposing projects that dialogue with the social particularities of our geographic space , acting in gaps, negotiations and how crucial it is to resume in the light of the 21st century other ways of thinking about national projects and discussions of ideas that resulted in the Latin American left-wing intellectual tradition.

In this article we analyze the inscription of the magazine Punto Final (1965-1973) in the chilean graphic renovation during the epoch of the sixties. According to this, we identify the magazine´s graphic characteristics considering its use of visual and textual representations. Our hypothesis is that the Punto Final coverstook a chance to build, along the Unidad Popular graphic, a national and regional new left graphic culture.

The article proposes to reconstruct the cycle of rise and decline of Third Worldism in the studies of communication and culture in Latin America, from a perspective of intellectual history. To do this, it reconstructs the diplomatic trajectories of Juan Somavía and Fernando Reyes Matta (Chile), from Santiago de Chile to Mexico, focusing on the activities related to the international debate on information promoted by the Non-Aligned Movement (NAM) at UNESCO. In tracing the cycle, the article focuses on the material threads of a transnational public sphere of communication, specifically on a segment articulated around the networks of Somavía and Reyes Matta, in which the ILET and the journal Comunicación y Cultura converged. Finally, to account for the closure of the cycle, it is demonstrated by way of example the problematization of the concept of the Third World that was formulated in the pages of the journal in the 1980s.

However, a historical study from a 'cosmopolitan perspective' requires an understanding of its various interpretations and applications, as cosmopolitanism has been a driving force behind concrete actions in specific contexts. This is evident in the case of the dictatorships in the Southern Cone and their resistances, particularly in the context of 'mail art.' This article proposes an analysis of the Cross-dresser scenic performance on Brazilian television, specifically in auditorium programs, through the performance of actor Jorge Lafond as his character Vera Verão. The objective is to take a critical look at how stereotypes emerge in these networks, assuming character positions, and how this contributes to the naturalization of the prominent figure in the process of social insertion. We will explore how Lafond's performance built repertoires and networks of sociability, examining the role of this representation in the social dynamics of the period in question. By focusing on this artistic expression on Brazilian television, we seek to understand how the Cross-dresser performance not only entertained the public, but also challenged social norms, thus contributing to anti-hegemonic projects within the Latin American media landscape of the 20th century.

This paper has as its object of study the speeches present in the works of Mário Pinto de Andrade, intellectual and first president of the Angolan Popular Liberation Movement. A problem of this work is what changes occur in pan-African identity during the process of anticolonial struggle and national liberation that took place in the Portuguese colonies. The aim of this paper is to analyze the relationship between Pan African identity and the discursive productions present in Andrade's literary works, which will be analyzed from the discourse analysis principles and procedures. The subjects and identities identified in the speeches (BRANDÃO, 2004). In this sense, the discourses were analyzed from the confluence between the application of discourses in their conditions of production and constitution of discourse in interdiscourse (ORLANDI, 2015).

Oyèrónkẹ́ Oyewùmí, em seu livro "A invenção das mulheres: construindo um sentido africano para os discursos ocidentais de gênero," analisa criticamente a imposição da categoria de gênero durante a colonização na iorubalândia. A autora destaca o impacto do determinismo biológico no pensamento ocidental e propõe sentidos outros para a compreensão das culturas e sociedades. Oyewùmí questiona a persistência da biologia na teoria feminista ocidental, explorando a organização social iorubá pré e pós-colonial, com ênfase na senioridade como princípio organizador. A pesquisa evidencia os efeitos da colonização nas instituições iorubás, desse modo, a autora também destaca a influência da linguagem na construção de gênero, criticando interpretações inadequadas de estudiosos ocidentais sobre a língua iorubá e enfatizando a necessidade de compreensão mais profunda das heranças epistêmicas na literatura iorubá.
