Discourse markers in interviews with native and non native speakers of English
Keywords:
Conversation Analysis, Discourse Markers, English LanguageAbstract
The aim of this article is to discuss the use of discourse markers in spoken texts in order to contrast their functions and meaning effects produced in interviews with a native and a non-native speaker of English. The corpus was composed of two interviews carried out with two English teachers: a Brazilian woman and a British man who currently lives in Brazil. The research follows the empirical-inductive method, and the theoretical framework was based on the concepts of Conversation Analysis. According to the findings, both native and non-native speakers of English used similar strategies regarding verbal planning, topic organization and the functions of discourse markers. It is important to highlight that these elements played an important role in the establishment of cohesive links among the parts of the text as well as they contributed to the maintenance and organization of conversation flow.
