Abstract

The aim of this paper is to first present Milton Friedman’s foundational ideas on the State's duty in the face of what the author calls competitive private enterprise capitalism. Next, we will seek to present the theory originally formulated by George Stigler on economic regulation, and the implication derived by the author, and shared by Friedman, that this form of direct intervention would stimulate oligopolization and monopolization, thus hindering competition in the market. Finally, we will contrast this viewpoint, defined as belonging to the neoliberal branch of the Chicago School of Economics, with a Marxist approach to the nature of capitalism and the role of the State in regulating movements that lead to the reproduction of the expanded accumulation of capital. As final considerations, we will point out some theoretical and methodological errors that, contradictorily, perhaps contribute in part to explaining the ideological and political relevance of the economic thought of the Chicago School.
