RORTY AND SCHAFER
elective affinities around Freudian psychoanalysis
Abstract
This article aims to identify and articulate points of contact between the Freudian psychoanalysis interpretations of the philosopher Richard Rorty and the psychoanalyst Roy Schafer. Interested in Freud's contribution to moral reflection, Rorty elaborates his interpretation, emphasizing the conversational aspect of psychic instances. Thus, ego, superego and id are understood by Rorty as “quasi persons” with beliefs, desires and intentions. Roy Schafer, for his part, explores psychoanalysis beginning with the revision of Freudian metapsychological language through a hermeneutic and narrative version of psychoanalysis. We propose that between Rorty's reading of Freud and Schafer's narrative version of psychoanalysis, there is a certain “elective affinity” of the two thinkers that consists in abandoning Freudian metapsychology through an anti-essentialist version of psychoanalysis.
