DEMOCRACY AND MISERY
on the philosophy of Tocqueville, organized by Helena Esser dos Reis
Abstract
Author of the classic Democracy in America, the French thinker Alexis de Tocqueville (1805-1859) also revealed himself to be a refined analyst of the social question, in two essays he wrote on the question of pauperism, between 1835 and 1837. These texts, which remained practically unpublished in Brazil, were translated by Professor Helena Esser dos Reis (UFG), in the book Democracy and Misery (Almedina Brasil, 2020), which also contains a series of six essays by renowned interpreters of the author's work. The work in question not only sheds light on aspects still little investigated in Tocquevillian thought, but also represents a great contribution to the current debate on the problem of poverty and social inequality.
