THE PERCEPTION STATUS AND THE ONTOLOGICAL SIGNIFICANCE OF THE "RETURN TO PHENOMENA" IN MERLEAU-PONTY’S PHILOSOPHY
Abstract
The aim of this article is to examine the status of the “return to phenomena” movement in Merleau-Ponty's philosophy, more precisely in his seminal work from 1945, The Phenomenology of Perception, comprising a questioning of the motivations, assumptions, and fundamental structures of this movement. This begins with a return to the central aspects of Merleau-Ponty's modern thought critique, followed by placing a magnifying glass on this French philosopher's project, placing it in the context of his tense and fruitful relations with Husserl’s philosophy and seeking to apprehend some of the traits that give this project a unique physiognomy. In the second part of the study, the reasons for the privilege of phenomenological field perception as defined by Merleau-Ponty are questioned. This allows us to recognize the function of primordial opening to the being in the world played by perceptual phenomena, bringing the inflections and paradoxes around which the relations between being and phenomenon are organized to the center of the philosophical debate.
