DA PSYCHOLOGICAL VALIDITY OF THE PROBLEM OF THE MEANING OF LIFE IN RAYMOND MARTIN
Abstract
In the article A fast car and a good woman (1993) Raymond Martin questions the real importance, from a psychological point of view, of the problem of the meaning of life for the individual who formulates it: is it the speculative philosophical problem that really concerns him? That is, questions concerning the purpose or the existence of objective values that can serve as a basis for a meaningful life? Or does such a problem, expressed so haughtily and pompously, actually comes down to a dissatisfaction that one feels about one’s own life, and therefore capable of a practical solution? We will present Martin's thought — undiscussed so far in the context of contemporary analytical debate — and critically discuss it, showing that Martin cannot satisfactorily sustain all points defended. Even so, through this discussion a new horizon seems to open up for the debate about the meaning of life.
