PHILOSOPHY AND ATTENTION

the challenge of teaching philosophy through a dialogue with Simone Weil

Keywords: Attention. Teachinf of Philosophy. Rancière. Simone Weil.

Abstract

Thinking about the teaching of Philosophy is not an easy task, as it implies previously answering some fundamental questions, namely, What is Philosophy? What is the difference between philosophy and philosophizing? What is the difference between a professor of philosophy and a philosopher? And finally, what and how to teach? I begin, in this article, with a contextualization that allows us to go through the first questions and briefly punctuate them. In a second moment, I explore the relationship between education and philosophy, taking the concept of attention as a mediator. I will do this from a dialogue with Simone Weil. In the third moment, I focus on the relationship between attention, emancipation and freedom, with the purpose of clarifying the challenge of teaching philosophy in the classroom. I conclude that Simone Weil is a crucial counterpoint reference for thinking about the teaching of philosophy as an exercise and practice of attention.
