Lettuce production in aquaponics system: influence of the crude protein level to the fish
Abstract
Aquaponia integrates aquaculture and vegetal production. This is possible due to the nutrients accumulation from the aquafeeds, and the aquatic organisms metabolism. However, more studies are necessary for the amelioration and production increases of the fish and plants in this system. The study evaluated the influences of two commercial fish feeds in aquaponia (36% and 45% crude protein). In this way, six experimental aquaponics systems were assembled for the test in triplicates. The results showed tendency of higher fish growth fed 45% crude protein. Nevertheless, plant growth was higher (P<0.05) in the aquaponics systems that fish were fed 36% crude protein. Fish feeds in aquaponics systems should be tailored and used considering the system as a whole and not only from the view of the fish nutrition. Aquaponics systems are complex. Equilibrium among all the components as fish, feeds, plants and microorganisms is the main foundation for the full operation.
