Geodiversity and Territorial Development Perspectives for the Enhancement of Geological Heritage in Mato Grosso do Sul
perspectivas para a valorização do patrimônio geológico em Mato Grosso do Sul
Abstract
Geoparks have consolidated in recent decades as important instruments for the valorization of geoheritage, geoscience education, and the promotion of sustainable territorial development. The UNESCO Global Geoparks Network has experienced significant growth since its creation, expanding the number of recognized territories across different regions of the world. In this context, concepts such as geodiversity, geoheritage, and geosites play a central role in the identification and valorization of geological elements with scientific, educational, and cultural relevance. This study discusses these concepts and presents a brief analysis of the evolution of geoparks in both international and Brazilian contexts, highlighting their importance as a strategy for integrating geological heritage conservation, scientific tourism, territorial education, and regional development. Based on this theoretical framework, the article analyzes the case of the state of Mato Grosso do Sul, with particular attention to the Serra da Bodoquena region, an area recognized for its high geological and landscape diversity. The analysis seeks to understand the potential of regional geoheritage and to discuss the challenges associated with the territorial scale required for the establishment of a geopark. The results indicate that the recognition and valorization of geosites, combined with educational and territorial management strategies, can contribute to strengthening territorial development initiatives based on geological heritage, expanding the role of geosciences in shaping new regional dynamics.
