Abstract

Educational research plays determinant role in teacher education by providing educators with the opportunity to develop a deeper and more critical understanding of their own pedagogical practice. In this context, this study aims to discuss the importance of educational research for teacher education and to present a reflection on the epistemological affiliation that guides educational research. The methodology adopted in this study consists of a bibliographic review of articles and books that address the theme of educational research and its relation to teacher education. From the analysis of the selected references, the critical approach emerges as one of the most pertinent epistemological approaches to guide educational research. A critical approach, based, in this study, mainly on the works of Michel Foucault and Paulo Freire, allows a deep and critical analysis of the power relations that permeate pedagogical practice. Based on these reflections, it is possible to develop a more inclusive and emancipatory pedagogical practice. As a result, this study concludes that educational research is a fundamental element for teacher education. Through it, educators can improve their skills and knowledge, and develop a more critical and reflective view of their own pedagogical practice. In this sense, the adoption of the critical approach is a valuable contribution to educational research and to the training of teachers committed to promoting social justice and educational equality.
