Abstract

This work aimed to understand how the international registry of Indigenous Peoples’ and Community Conserved Territories and Areas - ICCA contributes to the recognition of the role of traditional peoples in nature conservation in the current Brazilian legislative scenario. An analysis of the ICCA Registry was carried out, considering its positive and negative points as a tool for recognizing conserved territories. Based on bibliographical research and open data analysis, it can be observed that current legislation is not sufficiently comprehensive when it comes to traditional peoples and this is reflected in the lack of actions regarding the recognition of their territories and ways of life. The ICCA registry in this context presents itself as an important tool for recognizing and strengthening traditional territories, however, it does not necessarily reflect concrete actions in the demarcation and resolution of territorial conflicts.
