Abstract

In large cities, it is common for individuals to aspire not only to enjoy tourist areas but also to discover authentic and everyday places. Off-the-beaten-track tourism is an alternative model situated in locations not associated with the conventional tourist imagination. Furthermore, although not discussed in tourism studies, it is common for residents to engage in tourist practices. For this reason, the objective of this essay is to understand how the relationships between off-the-beaten-track tourism and the performances of residents as tourists are configured. To this end, the mobility shift was adopted to contrast the traditional concept of tourism with attitudes and activities that can be considered touristic. This discussion reinforces that there are gaps (epistemological and political) that need to be overcome for the continuation of research agendas on proximity tourism as a sustainable and authentic measure, provided it considers the local community.
