“Adopt a house”: reflections on citizenship and sustainabilities applied to building property with heritage value in the historical center of São Luís do Maranhão
Abstract
Revitalize historic spaces is a recurring agenda of managers of heritage assets that aim to maintain their conservation to meet the daily demands of centralities, in the face of growing abandonment. The Historic Center of the city of São Luís, capital of the state of Maranhão, entered into decline with the economic decline of manufacturing and commercial activities, at the end of the 19th century, intensifying from the 1970s after the construction of the São Luís bridge. Francisco and the Bacanga dam. At the end of the 20th century, government actions were adopted to mitigate this process, with the institution of the Reviver project and the resulting actions. In this article, the public policy “Adopt a big house” is addressed, which is part of the Program for the Revitalization and Enhancement of the Central Region of São Luís, entitled: “Our Center” with the purpose of assigning a reference in conservation and sustainable development to this space, preserving its historical and cultural importance, through public-private partnership, for the conditions of citizenship, heritage and socio-environmental sustainability. From the analysis of the conditions of the properties registered as heirs, it is concluded that their renovation and maintenance should be prioritized to encourage the preservation of the collection, considering the heritage of the set on a local, national and global scale.
