Phenomenology of tourism: an integrated approach
Abstract
Phenomenology, with its focus on lived experience, provides a unique lens for analyzing tourism. This study seeks to connect the various dimensions of this experience, which transcends the mere act of visiting a place. Tourism involves a complex interaction between time (anticipation, present, and memory), space (the relationship with places), body (sensations and movement), social relations (encounters with others and local culture), and emotions, all of which drive the search for meaning. From a phenomenological perspective, an integrated approach to tourism aims to understand how these elements interrelate, shaping the tourist experience as a whole. This implies analyzing the intentionality of the tourist and how this experience impacts their understanding of themselves and the world. This approach offers a richer and deeper understanding of tourist behavior and provides valuable insights for the planning, management, and development of tourism products, aligning offerings with the expectations and transformative experiences of travelers.
