Museum and tourism: perception of the Claretian Museum of Curitiba between memory, mediation, community identity, and tourism
Abstract
This study analyzes the Claretian Museum of Curitiba (MCC), focusing on its role as a space for the preservation and mediation of the historical and religious memory of the Claretian Missionary Congregation and the local community. The aim is to examine the MCC’s cultural mediation practices, the representation of the Congregation's history in the museum, and its interaction with the Rebouças neighborhood community. This qualitative research employs direct observation and document analysis. The findings indicate that the MCC plays a significant role in preserving important historical figures but presents a partial narrative, emphasizing certain characters and episodes from Claretian history. The museum has been striving to expand its mediation practices by involving the local community in the construction of the neighborhood’s collective memory and tourism initiatives. The conclusions show that the MCC contributes to strengthening local identity, although it faces challenges regarding the diversity of voices represented in its exhibitions. The study highlights the importance of religious and historical museums opening up to multiple perspectives, fostering a space of belonging and active participation. The originality of the research lies in the analysis of the MCC as a space of dialogue between the Congregation's history and the local community, emphasizing the relevance of cultural mediation practices that engage visitors in the construction and reinterpretation of historical memory.
