ITALY
Abstract
Nikolai Vassilievitch Gogol (1809-1852) became known as a Russian writer who wrote his work in the form of a short story and novel. In 2009 UNESCO announced “the year of Gogol” and at that time the bicentenary of the birth of this great writer was celebrated through different exhibitions and events. From this historical landmark, the importance of his work emerged beyond the context of the history of Russian literature, his writings became better known, and are now considered to be some of the greatest works of international literature of all time. In 1829, Nikolai Vassilievitch Gogol, already residing in St. Petersburg, published the poems Hanz Küchelgarten and "Italy" - both of romantic character. About this second poem, it is known that the great Russian writer had a deep connection with Italy, which influenced his private life and inspired his artistic production. During a long period composed of many oscillations, Gogol lived in Rome, in Italian lands, the writer produced what is considered his masterpiece, the novel - “Dead Souls”. Taking into account the writer's experience abroad, I would like to suggest a translation, perhaps the only one in Portuguese, of the poem “Italy”.
