UNDERSTANDING “PERCEPTION” AND “MOTION” IN MARGARET CAVENDISH FROM HER CRITICISM OF HOBBES
Abstract
Thomas Hobbes and the members of the Cavendish family were first-rate intellectuals in the scenery of seventeenth-century Europe. The work that is accomplished in this article can be summarized in one specific theoretical proposal: to shed some light on the concepts of perception and motion in the philosophical system on nature defended by Margaret Cavendish. Such an effort will be realized through the study of the opposition of Cavendish’s and Hobbes’ thought, opposition which is made by the “authoress” herself, in the first part of the Philosophical Letters (1664). A thorough analysis of this and other dialogues present in such a work is necessary for us to have a better grasp on the theory of nature developed by the duchess of Newcastle and, consequently, to better reconstruct the intellectual scenery of seventeenth-century Europe.
