Abstract

This article aims to briefly resume John Stuart Mill’s and Sigmund Freud’s concepts of pleasure and happiness in order to ascertain the supposed Millian inheritance of Freudian reflections in this regard. To do so, it recovers Stuart Mill's conception of pleasure and happiness, it takes up the three main concepts of the pleasure principle and happiness made in Freud's work, and finally, it compares the two author’s positions. The article concludes that such conceptualizations seem to have been informed by the evolutionary psychology projects of the 19th century, in the wake of which Freud’s is inserted. It also derives some consequences that lead to some questions both of the ethical-political assumptions of Mill as much as part of what supports neoliberalism today.

Marcelo Ferretti, Fundação Getúlio Vargas - Escola de Administração de Empresas de São Paulo

É Professor Turno Completo da Escola de Administração de Empresas de São Paulo da Fundação Getúlio Vargas (EAESP-FGV), onde ministra e coordena disciplinas de Psicologia e de Ética. Graduado em Psicologia (2007) e em Filosofia (2011) pela Universidade de São Paulo (USP), é doutor em Filosofia (2014) pela Universidade Estadual de Campinas (UNICAMP). Tem experiência nas áreas de Filosofia e de Psicologia, com ênfase em Psicanálise, Psicologia do Trabalho, Ética e História da Psicologia. Atualmente, investiga as relações entre saúde mental e trabalho e entre psicanálise, teoria social e filosofia. É integrante do Laboratório de Teoria Social, Filosofia e Psicanálise da Universidade de São Paulo (LATESFIP-USP).
