IS THE TRUTH STILL RELEVANT TO US?
some consideration of truth and politics in Hannah Arendt
Abstract
Hannah Arendt's critique of the relationship between rational truth and politics is well known. In short, her divergence from traditional political thought, especially with Plato, concerns the despotic character of the concept of truth, and how controversial it can be if we take politics and human affairs into account. Nevertheless, Arendt published in 1967 an article entitled Truth and Politics, where she defended the relevance of preserving the truth concerning facts: an essential category for the public sphere. Admitting together with Richard Bernstein the relevance of Arendtian thought, the aim of this article is to discuss, firstly, the difference between rational truth and factual truth; then, we will work on the opposition between truth and opinion; and, finally, our intention is to discuss these categories in the light of our most recent political experience, namely: the phenomenon of fake news and the COVID-19 pandemic.
