ARISTOTLE AND THE MEGARIAN TRADITION ABOUT DYNAMIS

Abstract

The main objective of this article is to explain the conception of the megarian tradition about capacity (δύναμις), as presented in the book Theta of Aristotle's Metaphysics. The analysis is necessary due to the lack of aristotelian attention in the treatment of the problem, which at no time seems to offer us plausible arguments that justify the thesis of its opponents. Starting from this difficulty and aiming to offer greater dignity to the megarian thesis, the study will, first of all, demonstrate possible arguments that support the thesis. To then prove that, even though the megarian thesis is not as easily refutable as a first reading might suggest, there are serious problems in its structure, which are evident in the face of the aristotelian conception of capacity.

Beatriz Saar, Universidade Federal do Rio de Janeiro

Doutoranda em Filosofia Antiga pelo Programa de Pós-graduação Lógica e Metafísica da Universidade Federal do Rio de Janeiro (PPGLM/UFRJ). Possui graduação (2021) em Filosofia pela Universidade Federal do Rio de Janeiro (UFRJ) e mestrado (2023) em Filosofia pelo Programa de Pós-graduação Lógica e Metafísica da Universidade Federal do Rio de Janeiro (PPGLM/UFRJ). É também integrante do grupo de pesquisa Programa de Estudos em Filosofia Antiga (PRAGMA/UFRJ), vinculado ao CNPq, e da Sociedade Brasileira de Estudos Clássicos (SBEC). Tem experiência na área de Filosofia, com ênfase em Filosofia Antiga, atuando principalmente nos seguintes temas: Beleza, Metafísica, Neoplatonismo e Estética. Dedica-se também aos Estudos Clássicos, em especial abordando perspectivas platônicas nas obras dos romancistas gregos do Período Imperial.
