Abstract

The instructors of martial arts or combat sports teach their modality and are, for many, life references, both in health and in education. This research had as objective to determine what type of training instructors of "martial arts of oriental origin" have in the city of Chillán, Chile. This study is qualitative and descriptive. To collect the information, the in-depth interview technique was used to identify the teaching strategies used and the teaching skills they have. It was also asked what specialization or training they have to carry out the teaching work. The most important results of this study show that their strength to teach, subjects attribute to the experience they had as students and that the main concern for training is related to technical aspects specific to each modality or style. It is true that the majority of instructors have formal higher education, but none of them correspond to Physical Education, which highlights the scarce conceptual and methodological domain, in face of the teaching and learning process, as the almost nonexistent handling of biological principles, which can translate into risk for the health of its students.
