ACCESS OF SENIOR CITIZENS TO UNDERGRADUATE PROGRAMS: Exclusive Selection Processes in Federal Universities of Minas Gerais
Processos Seletivos Exclusivos nas Universidades Federais de Minas Gerais
Abstract
Federal universities, as bodies of public administration, must adapt to population aging and the social structural transformations resulting from this new reality. This study examines, within the state of Minas Gerais, how federal universities promote specific access to undergraduate programs for senior citizens. To this end, a bibliographic search was conducted to support the theoretical approach, alongside a description of the format of exclusive selection processes for this demographic. The survey revealed that only three federal institutions in Minas Gerais have promoted simplified notices specifically aimed at seniors. It is concluded, therefore, that advancements fostering the enrollment of older adults in undergraduate education are crucial—both as a solution to the current problem of vacant seats and as a strategic innovation to adapt organizational structures to the new demographic framework. Furthermore, it is imperative to develop an inclusive strategic institutional approach that coordinates the implementation of specific policies for access, retention, assistance, and accessibility for the elderly.
