Challenges of Generation Z in Contemporary Management: Innovative Potential and Resistance to Leadership Positions
potencial inovador e resistência aos cargos de liderança
Abstract
This study analyzes the challenges faced by Generation Z in contemporary management, highlighting the innovative potential of these young professionals and the resistance observed toward formal leadership positions. The research problem focuses on the difficulties encountered by managers when leading Generation Z professionals and on the factors that influence their low willingness to assume managerial roles. The study adopted a qualitative approach with an exploratory and descriptive design, using a literature review and primary data collection through questionnaires administered to 37 participants, including members of Generation Z, as well as semi-structured interviews with three managers from different sectors. The results indicate that although Generation Z presents characteristics valued in today’s organizational context—such as technological proficiency, adaptability, and creativity—significant gaps persist in socio-emotional competencies, particularly emotional intelligence, assertive communication, and conflict management. Resistance to traditional leadership positions was also identified, associated with the perception of high responsibility, stress, and the negative impact on work–life balance. It is concluded that participative and humanized leadership models, combined with development programs focused on emotional competencies, constitute appropriate strategies to prepare and engage Generation Z in contemporary management.Downloads
