Reproductive planning as a public health strategy: advances and challenges for SDG 3 in Brazil
avanços e desafios para o ODS 3 no Brasil
Abstract
This study analyzed scientific publications related to reproductive planning and reproductive planning within the Brazilian Unified Health System (SUS), focusing on the contribution of these actions to achieving target 3.7 of Sustainable Development Goal 3 (SDG 3), which establishes universal access to sexual and reproductive health. An integrative review was conducted exclusively in the SciELO database, including articles published between 2020 and 2025. The analysis of the identified studies revealed five central themes: access to and availability of contraceptive methods; quality of professional counseling; racial, socioeconomic, and territorial inequalities; impacts of reproductive planning on health outcomes; and organizational challenges in the implementation of public policies aimed at women's health. The results show that, despite important normative advances, barriers persist related to the availability of long-acting contraceptive methods, insufficient training of teams, weaknesses in the organization of services, and structural inequalities that limit women's reproductive autonomy. It is concluded that strengthening reproductive planning within the Brazilian Unified Health System (SUS) is essential for promoting equity, reducing maternal morbidity and mortality, and achieving the goals of the 2030 Agenda, requiring ongoing investments in management, professional training, and policies that recognize women as subjects of rights.
