Abstract

Family farming plays a central role in the rural development of Latin America, and Paraguay has a large number of Peasant Family Agriculture. Considering the role of PFA in the country, this research aimed to characterize peasant family agriculture in the Potrero Sur colony. For this purpose, 24 households in the same locality were surveyed. Using a non-experimental design methodology, qualitative and quantitative data were collected from the representative sample. The results show that 92% of household heads are male, primarily engaged in farming, while women handle household chores. The age distribution is as follows: 33% (52 to 62 years old), 29% (26 to 40 years old), and 17% (41 to 51 years old). The majority have only completed primary education, with 79% of income coming from crop yields, and 75% having only primary education. The purpose of the farm for 83% is self-sufficiency and income generation, with 92% working in agriculture and the remainder in livestock. 62% of their products are sold directly, 83% of the land is titled, with 70% acquired through inheritance. The main strength of the community is land tenure, the opportunity is the market, and the weakness is the lack of technical assistance, with threats posed by climate, pests, and diseases.
