Abstract

This article highlights the potential and use of digital information and communication technologies and the differences between traditional distance learning (DL) and emergency remote education (ERE), offered in times of crisis or disaster. In a brief history of DL, it is evaluated what are their differences in relation to online education, implemented in a hurry in this emergency moment during the Covid-19 pandemic. Supported by theoretical framework and recent research, these differences are highlighted from the comparative analysis of DL with ERE. Considering that the speed of change for online instruction is occurring in an unprecedented and exponential way, it is of great importance to understand each of these learning situations, in order to avoid generalist and stigmatized views, which hinder and oppose both systems. Despite technological advances making possible more and more advanced solutions in the area of education, an adequate pedagogical planning is necessary for the different situations and needs of teaching, in each stage of learning. This emergency revolution can drive a new EAD, more synchronous with recent technological advances and that alleviates the biggest problem of this educational modality, which is school dropout.
