Study of the impacts of the Mariana disaster on the academic life of Ifes students from the Traditional Riverside Communities of the Middle Rio Doce: access, (non) permanence and success.

Abstract

Ifes is a federal institution that was created based on Law Nº 11,892/2008, with the main objective of: Offering professional and technological education, as an educational and investigative process, in all its levels and modalities, especially at secondary level, in in line with the consolidation and strengthening of local productive arrangements, supporting educational processes that lead to job and income generation. As a Pedagogue of the Pedagogical Advisory Courses of the Pro-Rectory of Teaching at Ifes, we realized through an incursion into the Academic System that strangely, from 2016, a number of students from the Riverside Communities of the Middle Rio Doce, discontinued their courses, abandoned , or locked up, or remained, but did not achieve academic success. We could not enter into an in-depth study to answer the disturbing questions, because it is not just a bureaucratic institutional action. It was necessary to propose a scientific investigation with methodology, theoretical contributions and all the appropriate academic background, to enter this universe of Traditional Communities and understand their academic difficulties in continuing their courses. In this way, the present research proposal is based on this problem and seeks to investigate, if there were impacts, to verify if they were adopted by the Ifes campuses, according to their social function and objectives, social, economic and pedagogical measures to promote access, the permanence and success of these students. It will be based on a review of the existing literature on the subject and on the current legislation, created on the subject of Education for Traditional Communities. The relevance of this study is highlighted,
firstly because it is an unprecedented investigation, and in the case of one of the biggest environmental disasters in Brazil, which harmed not only the natural environment, the fauna and flora along the Rio Doce, but also in the life of Traditional Peoples and Communities, who have in this environmental locus, their dwellings, their habits, their customs, their professional activities, their livelihood. It is a contradictory process that requires collective effort, involving the entire academic community of Ifes, so that institutional actions are translated into the boldness of facing the social problems that rise to the exclusionary bias of the Brazilian school.
