Artificial Intelligence Use Policy

Artificial Intelligence and its applications in so-called large language models (LLMs) and text-generation tools have become increasingly widespread in society and have begun to affect scientific practice. In this context, drawing on the recommendations of the Committee on Publication Ethics (COPE) and in accordance with CNPq Ordinance No. 2,664 of March 6, 2026, which establishes the Policy on Integrity in Scientific Activity, Ateliê do Turismo sets forth the following guidelines for the use of Generative Artificial Intelligence (GAI) in manuscripts submitted to the journal.

  1. GAI tools may serve as an auxiliary resource in the development of academic texts and scientific research. However, they present limitations, biases, and potential problems of objectivity and accuracy. Their use in the preparation of manuscripts must be approached in a measured, critical, and responsible manner — for instance, by verifying the validity of information and references provided and checking for potential plagiarism or inaccuracies in generated content. The use of AI to fabricate or manipulate data, and the submission of manuscripts produced entirely by GAI tools, are expressly prohibited and constitute serious research misconduct.
  2. In the interest of scientific transparency, the use of GAI must be mandatorily disclosed in the manuscript, with a description of the tool used, the stage of the research process in which it was employed, and the purpose of its use — preferably in the methodology section. Articles may also include reflections on the advantages and limitations of the resource across different applications, such as generating initial ideas, categorizing data, constructing tables, and reviewing text, among others. The following declaration template is suggested: "The authors used the tool [name] at the stage of [stage] for the purpose of [objective]. The conception of the study, the analysis of data, and the conclusions are the sole responsibility of the authors." If no GAI tool was used, authors are encouraged to explicitly declare that condition.
  3. Authorship of scientific works is intrinsically linked to the full development of an intellectual creation, entailing both moral and legal responsibilities. Therefore, only human beings may assume this role: LLMs and GAI tools must not be listed as authors or co-authors of works submitted to Ateliê do Turismo. All signatory authors bear full responsibility for the published content, including any sections that benefited from GAI assistance.
  4. The evaluation of scientific works is a human task that involves concerns about the confidentiality of the relationship among the journal, its authors, and its reviewers. Accordingly, editors and reviewers of Ateliê do Turismo must not use GAI tools at any stage of the manuscript review process, so as to preserve the integrity of peer review.
  5. Non-compliance with these guidelines may result in the immediate rejection of the manuscript and, in cases of proven misconduct, in the public retraction of the article and formal notification to funding agencies (CNPq, CAPES). The editorial team reserves the right to use AI-generated content detection tools as part of the evaluation process for submitted manuscripts.
