Political Economy of tourism
Abstract
Despite humans have moved since antiquity, tourism, as a complex social practice, was instituted as a result of economic and social relations from the Industrial Revolution and the its consolidation on the capitalist mode of production. Since this historical period, it has gone through different configurations, shaped by these same relationships, over the last one hundred and fifty years. This paper analyses, on a critical view, based on bibliographic references of Tourism Studies, Geography, Socology, and Economy, the transformation of this social practice, from a dialetical perspective, and how this same society shaped tourism, through threemoments: before the Industrial Revolution; from the consolidation of capitalism until the late 1970s; and in the Informational Era, from the 1980s to the present. It aims to contribute to the academic knowledge of this science, through the discussion based on the theoretical reconstitution of Political Economy in tourism, whereas that it is studied by other sciences and a central issue within the human and social studies.
