Evolution of research methods in tourism: a structured literature review
Abstract
The retrievals of scientific productions in Tourism still lack a deep understanding of how research in the field is being conducted. Considering this, the objective of this study is to identify the evolution of research methods, whether theoretical or empirical, within the Tourism domain. To achieve this, through a Structured Literature Review (SLR), 153 articles from the seven internationally most significant journals in the field of tourism were analyzed. The technique employed involved counting the most commonly used methods in the publications. The research reveals a predominance of clustering techniques (Exploratory and Confirmatory Factor Analysis) and data modeling through structural equation modeling, indicating that Tourism is in the phase of testing and validating the theories employed. Besides mapping the stage of methodological development of the field, the study contributes to reflections on the evolution of research conduct in Tourism, showing that there is a predominance of descriptive studies, with opportunities for qualitative, exploratory, or even causal studies.
