Brazilian Carnival and National Identity - a brief history of the festivity and the nation

Abstract

The present article aims to analyze the process of consolidation of Carnival in Brazil and its relationship with the construction of National Identity. It examines the origin of the festival, influenced by pagan and ancient festivities, and its connection with the Catholic religion. Through bibliographical and documentary analysis, the work delves into the earliest forms of Carnival manifestations brought by the Portuguese, such as the entrudo, and the French-influenced masked balls, culminating in the hybrid Carnival, which would later be called Brazilian Carnival and become one of the references for national identity.

PhD in Geography from Universidade Estadual Paulista Júlio de Mesquita Filho - UNESP - Presidente Prudente (2003), with postdoctoral studies at the University of Buenos Aires (Argentina). Currently, he is a retired Full Professor at the Federal University of Mato Grosso do Sul and serves as a permanent professor in the Graduate Program in Cultural Studies at the Aquidauana Campus.
