LITERATURA NEGRA e seu contexto britânico

Resumo

Um dos fatos mais surpreendentes  na  literatura  britânica  contemporânea  consiste não apenas na quantidade  de escritores  ‘negros’ dedicados  à narrativa  ficcional, mas na  sua importância no contexto literário.  Pode-se  dizer que, a partir de 1950, o surgimento    de um conjunto de escritores caribenhos, nigerianos, sul-africanos, quenianos, indianos, bangladeshianos e outros tem dado um vigor novo e diferente à literatura britânica e à literatura escrita em inglês. No contexto de uma sociedade multirracial e, acima de tudo, supostamente multicultural, os autores ‘negros’ têm privilegiado em suas narrativas e em seus ensaios a problemática da hegemonia racial, da miscigenação, das tensões entre a ideologia dominante e a convivência da população marginalizada e das negociações entre as personagens. Para muita gente, este fato é algo incompreensível e de difícil assimilação. Devido à extensão de seu Império e a consequente superioridade cultural imperial e por um sutil esquecimento histórico, a população do Reino Unido sempre se julgou eminentemente branca com uma missão (“o fardo do homem branco”, poetizado no auge do Império Britânico, por Rudyard Kipling, em 1899) de transmitir, com trágicas consequências, a civilização europeia.
