Abstract

This study aims to identify the challenges faced by Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs) in their internationalization, considering the political, economic, and social barriers that impact their performance in the global market. The research adopts a theoretical approach based on the existing literature on SME internationalization, utilizing an integrative review to compile and analyze data from academic articles published in the last five years. The methodology involves searching databases such as Web of Science and Science Direct, resulting in the selection of 17 relevant studies. The main findings indicate that SMEs face difficulties related to a lack of knowledge about foreign markets, the complexity of international legislation, and financial limitations. Additionally, the research highlights the importance of innovation as a strategy for the competitiveness of SMEs on the international stage. Practical implications suggest that managers should invest in training and skills development to overcome these barriers, while policymakers should create a more favorable environment for the internationalization of SMEs. The originality of this work lies in its theoretical and methodological contribution by comprehensively addressing the challenges of SME internationalization. Limitations include the restriction of the temporal scope and reliance on secondary sources.
