REINVENTING THE REPUBLIC: ROUSSEAU AND ROBESPIERRE AND THE REVOLUTION OF CONCEPTS
Abstract
Rousseau was a very important influence in the French Revolution, contributing to redefine our historical a priori, until today. However, in what ways was this influence exercised? In this article, having as starting point a dialogue between Rousseau and Robespierre, I look at the diferences between Rousseau’s thought and the reception and subversion of it. I argue that in Robespierre one can identify a revolution of a concept - of natural right - which allows us to reconceptualize the relationship between nature and republic, from an entirely distinct and foreign perspective to Rousseau. Also, I argue that Robespierre overcomes Rousseau’s dilema explicit in the question of having to create and maintain virtuous citizens through the total redefinition (or even elimination) of the concept of virtue and its equation of its relationship to poverty.
