PSYCHOANALYSIS AND PHILOSOPHY
a response to Dr. Theodor Reik’s critique
Abstract
This article was published by James Jackson Putnam in 1913, in the Zentralblatt für Psychoanalyse und Psychotherapie, a few months after the publication of Reik’s critical review of the Putnam conference entitled On the importance of training and philosophical perspectives for the future development of the psychoanalytic movement. For more information on the Putnam conference, see Freitas Pinto and Padovan (2019). Originally written in German, here we present to the reader the first Brazilian version of Putnam’s response to Reik. We have no news of other translations of this material into any other language. It is, therefore, a pioneering work, which contains a sequence of translations and publications carried out by us, directed to texts that make up the first great debate between philosophy and psychoanalysis within the psychoanalytic movement. Our next step is to integrate the set of these texts, deepening the reflection on their historical and philosophical importance, and broadening the debate, presenting other authors who focused on the subject, in the same period, discussions about the relationship between psychoanalysis and philosophy.
