hegemonic masculinity in Tropic of Capricorn
Abstract
This text intends to reaffirm that the categories of sex, gender and sexuality are social constructions and, therefore, not based on a biological determinism. Thus, the genital parts (sex) when being sexually activated produce the practices of being male or female (which is independent of the genital biological formation), thus defining gender as action and, in turn, generating an impulse to be satisfied (sexuality). Based on this premise, it is necessary to historicize, from the analysis of the literary work Tropic of Capricorn, Henry Miller's novel (1961 USA, 1975 Brazil), the primacy of masculinity, starting from the history of the manly man who Western patriarchal societies helped to build.Downloads
