Abstract

This work represents an excerpt from a research that studies cases of transphobia in Brazil, aiming to analyze the Brazilian media and how it reports these crimes, as well as the reflection that these violences are perpetuated through hatred and aversion to transvestites and transsexuals, as well as the problem of underreporting of this data, due to the federal government's failure to monitor these murders. The methodology used in the research is of a qualitative nature, a study developed from ANTRA's dossiers and bibliographic references that cover the subject. The results presented show that the symbolic violence found in the reports at times when the media omits the social name, gender identity and emphasizes that they were “dressed as a woman” corroborate the growth of transphobic violence. Therefore, we evidence the growth that represents the change in the way that journalism exposes homicides, but unfortunately, we still easily find reports that explain transphobia. Therefore, we emphasize the importance of using education as a tool to reduce structural prejudice in society, so that we can all enjoy the right to life, encouraging equity and respect for the Other's gender identity.
