For the blind to see: an analysis of the accessibility of the Provincial Palace of Manaus for visually impaired tourists
Abstract
The population of people with disabilities or reduced mobility has increased considerably in recent years. In Brazil, about 35.8 million people have visual impairment, which is the most recurrent in the country and in the state of Amazonas, where we find about 651,200 people with this disability. Considering the growing demand of people with visual impairments in the state, it is expected that the museums and cultural centers existing in the place will provide accessibility to this public. In this way, using the Palacete Provincial Cultural Center, which is located in the state capital and which has a majority flow of local visitors, this study has the general objective of analyzing the accessibility in the Palacete Provincial for the service of tourists with visual impairments or low vision. . This is a descriptive, bibliographic and qualitative research in which guided tours were carried out with 5 visually impaired people and a survey was applied after the visit. As a result, it was found that the Palacete Provincial Cultural Center does not meet the needs of a visually impaired person regarding the accessibility of the museums that integrate the space. As a theoretical contribution, this research, in addition to bringing historical and descriptive information about the Cultural Center object of study, presents the literature on accessible tourism and Brazilian legislation in spite of accessibility. As a practical contribution, it presents subsidies that can help to make managers aware of the need to invest in accessibility in cultural centers, which can be replicated in other museums and cultural centers.
