Abstract

This article analyzes the practice of storytellers in the Pantanal, examining their importance in preserving local culture and transmitting oral traditions. Drawing on the works of Gagnebin and Prost, key figures in Cultural Studies, it investigates how these storytelling practices serve as vehicles for regional identity, resistance and memory preservation. The analysis relies on Raymond Williams’ theory to understand the causos as cultural practices and strategies of resistance against standardization. The theoretical framework reveals that causos are essential for preserving traditions and community cohesion, functioning as a form of cultural resistance and a way to confront social and cultural changes in the Pantanal context. It is concluded that, through oral narratives, storytellers play a crucial role in constructing and conserving the collective memory of the Pantanal, offering insights into how local traditions adapt to the pressures of modernity and globalization.
