Abstract

This paper seeks to investigate the preparation and training of teachers in the city of Pato Branco, Paraná, to meet the demands of special education, analyzing existing theories without conducting field research. The inclusion of students with disabilities in mainstream education is an increasingly present reality in Brazilian schools, but many educators still face significant challenges due to a lack of specific training and adequate pedagogical support. The central problem addressed is how the initial and ongoing training of teachers impacts on the quality of care offered to these students. The research methodology consisted of a comprehensive literature review, which explored Brazilian legislation, guidelines and best practices in the field of inclusive education. Studies discussing the importance of teacher training and the skills needed to work with students with disabilities were investigated. The results of the review revealed that, despite national guidelines encouraging inclusive education, there are still significant gaps in teacher training. The conclusions indicate that, for inclusion to be effective, it is essential that teachers receive adequate training to enable them to work with the diversity present in their classrooms. The study reinforces the need for an institutional commitment to guarantee resources and ongoing support for educators in order to promote an inclusive, quality educational environment. In addition, it is necessary to advance knowledge about pedagogical practices adapted to the needs of students with disabilities.
