Mathematical Modelling Tasks in Encouraging Linear Systems of Equations: the Case of Water Flows

Abstract

This study aims to describe the modelling processes developed by Costa Rican students in a linear algebra class, when solving a modelling task in the context of flows involving concepts of Systems of Linear Equations. Data collection included students' written resolutions of the task and their files produced in Wolfram Mathematica. The analysis revealed the use of System of Linear Equation concepts and associated concepts to build mathematical models in the whole class. However, knowledge based on linear algebra concepts was not enough to prevent students from showing difficulties in interpreting and/or validating mathematical results, which suggests greater promotion of this type of task in the mathematics classroom.
