PARATY'S RESIDENTS VIEW ABOUT THE IMPACTS OF TOURISM
Abstract
Tourist destinations influence how tourism appropriates as well as how it is appropriated by the local community in a dialogical relationship. In tourism processes, the community reacts in different ways and has different attitudes towards tourism. The objective of this work is to investigate the impressions residents of Paraty, located in the state of Rio de Janeiro, have about tourism. Therefore, an investigation was carried out under the theoretical-empirical perspective regarding to the residents' attitudes towards tourism. Quantitative data of 402 Paraty residents' opinions, collected through questionnaires, allows analyzing the positive and negative effects of tourism according to residents' views. From a theoretical point of view, the results indicate that the tourism/resident relationship has been worked in numerous international studies. The outcomes are close to those found in the present research, highlighting the main positive effects, such as the generation of employment and income, the maintenance and preservation of heritage, and natural resources. On the other hand, increased pollution, traffic problems, and the growth of prostitution are considered adverse effects.
