Abstract

Abstract: This essay aims to explore and compare the issue of the fighting for self-determination represented in Palestinian and Latin American narratives, focusing on the novels Men in the Sun by Palestinian author Ghassan Kanafani and The President by Guatemalan author Miguel Ángel Asturias. Despite their distinct narrative techniques and literary styles, both authors converge in their exploration of critical themes that transcend their respective cultures. This study will be conducted through marxist Cultural Studies, more specifically through the works of Raymond Williams (1979), to investigate how literary narratives reflect and contribute to the fighting for self-determination. We will analyze the similarities and differences between the political, social, and cultural contexts of these regions and examine how the literary elements of the novels are used to convey the experiences of struggle and resistance of Palestinian and Latin American peoples.

    Professora de Língua Espanhola e Literaturas de Língua Espanhola do Departamento de Letras e professora do Programa de Pós Graduação em Estudos da Linguagem (PROGEL) da Universidade Federal Rural de Pernambuco (UFRPE). Doutora em Teoria da Literatura.  Líder do Grupo de Pesquisa “Narrativas hispano-americanas do século XX” (UFRPE/DGP/CNPq).

  • Tânia Mara Rupp Bourbon Nava, UFRPE

    Mestranda pelo Programa de Pós-Graduação em Estudos da Linguagem da Universidade Federal Rural de Pernambuco (PROGEL-UFRPE) e licenciada em Letras pela Universidade Federal de Pernambuco (UFPE), com habilitação em Língua Portuguesa e respectivas literaturas (Recife, 2022). Integra, hodiernamente, o Grupo de Pesquisa "Narrativas Hispano-Americanas do Século XX" (UFRPE/DGP/CNPq), sob a coordenação da Profa. Dra. Amanda Brandão Araújo Moreno (UFRPE), onde desenvolve pesquisas no âmbito do projeto "Narrativas Insólitas, Disruptivas, Decoloniais". Debruça-se sobre a análise das dimensões memorial e histórica em narrativas latino-americanas contemporâneas. Seu interesse abrange, ademais, as relações entre literatura e sociedade sob o viés analítico do materialismo-dialético, bem como os aspectos da educação brasileira através das lentes do anticolonialismo e da pedagogia histórico-crítica.
