The historical development of vernacular linguistics as a field of study

Folk linguistics faces certain difficulties regarding its nomenclature: should it be called “folk linguistics” or “profane,” “everyday,” or “secular”? This chapter begins with a detailed examination of the concept of “folk” before outlining the history of this field of research, paying particular attention to folk (or “perceptual”) dialectology. It then establishes the value of works in popular linguistics in relation to various other fields of interest, concluding by situating popular linguistics within the broader framework of related studies, collectively referred to here as the “language regard.”
