Abstract

The present study comes from a Doctoral thesis, defended in 2015, by the Federal University of Mato Grosso do Sul. It aims to analyze the historical trajectory of Early Childhood Education in Brazil, as well as child care, and discuss the advances and setbacks this educational modality, with an emphasis on educational policies, especially the training of teachers working in this field. It is understood that investigating the past provides the researcher with a critical and analytical view of the challenges that are posed in contemporary society, with implications for the education of the child. The investigation proposed a search for the main historical records of Early Childhood Education, bringing up-to-date discussions, whose scenario presents a complex and challenging reality, in the context of the policies and the responsibility load of teachers working in this scenario. Such concerns guided the research, developed from the perspective of a bibliographic study, with consultations and readings related to the theme. It is important to highlight that through studies it was possible to perceive that children's schools in Brazil have undergone, over the years, different changes in their functions, which have gone from assistentialism to the educational function. The conclusive questions of the research point out that, from the historical point of view, there was a significant advance in legislation when it recognized the child as a citizen, as a subject of rights, including the right to quality education from birth. Educational policies for children have implemented advances in the area, but that still needs more investments in teacher training.
