Abstract

Stereotype threat is a phenomenon in which people belonging to stigmatized groups feel threatened to confirm a negative stereotype attributed to the group of which they are part. Several groups are at risk, especially: women, blacks and people of low socioeconomic status. It is often attributed to these groups, and especially to women, low aptitude for the exact sciences. This bias is observed from school age, arising in children, and extending to academic and professional life. When submitted to specific tasks under the influence of the stereotype, high levels of stress and anxiety significantly increase the difficulty of the ongoing task. It is noteworthy that the adoption of appropriate instructions for the tests and awareness about the existence of this type of phenomenon has a "protective" effect for stigmatized groups. In this work, we present the construction of the workshop, where we intend to reflect, performing presentations and practical activities of awareness about the existence of the threat by stereotype, in addition to proposing about practices that prevent the occurrence of this phenomenon. This approach has special relevance for contributing to the reversal of the inequalities of opportunities faced by people belonging to stigmatized groups. The target audience for this activity will be students from high schools, teachers enrolled in undergraduate courses or any specialization course in education or health, anyone inserted in the area of education as well as other education professionals with training in any area of knowledge, fathers / mothers / guardians and people involved with public policies of education and health.
