Abstract

Given the growth of Distance Education (DE) platforms in higher education and the increasing privatization of teacher's formation, this paper questions the significance of Pedagogy as the science of education. We draw on the work of prominent education scholars such as Libâneo (2010, 2023), Pimenta (2006, 2020), Schmied-Kowarzik (1988), Saviani (2013, 2019, 2021) to examine this issue. Our analysis of a few Brazilian Ministry of Education data reveals a contradiction: while Pedagogy programs are popular, they are often narrowly focused on teacher's formation in elementary school and the initial scholar grade. We argue that the importance of Pedagogy needs to be emphasized, especially in light of the challenges faced by our pedagogical society, especially about the popular use of Information and Communication Technologies (ICTs).
