Abstract

Through the analysis of a corpus of comedy films and TV shows, we aim to examine the work of translators and subtitlers in reproducing jokes, humorous references, and wordplay, with the goal of understanding the linguistic ideologies underlying their decisions. In this way, we propose a counterintuitive hypothesis: that the translation of the ridiculous is not only possible but necessary, and that its effectiveness depends less on the socio-cultural context than commonly believed.
