Abstract

This study is characterized as a theoretical essay based on a bibliographic review, developed within the context of a Graduate Program in Education, and aims to contribute to the debate on algorithmic racism and its relationship with the development of artificial intelligence and the (re)production of racial prejudice, as well as to present the possible implications of this reconfiguration of racism in the educational context. To this end, authors who discuss structural and algorithmic racism, as well as critical thinking and artificial intelligence in the educational field, were mobilized, enabling the establishment of relationships among technology, society, and historically constituted racial inequalities. The theoretical analysis conducted shows that artificial intelligence-based systems, when operating from large volumes of data, may incorporate and reproduce discriminatory patterns present in social dynamics. It is concluded that, although the inclusion of artificial intelligence in education may be configured as an innovation in the teaching and learning process, it may also intensify processes of segregation and expand already existing inequalities in their various social, economic, and cultural dimensions. The study also highlights the need to develop critical thinking and the intellectual autonomy of users of artificial intelligence technologies as ways to address algorithmic biases, with emphasis on those that produce new forms of racism and social exclusion.
